Description

The Liquid Limit Device with Counter is a fundamental tool in geotechnical engineering and soil mechanics laboratories. Used to determine the liquid limit of soil—an essential parameter in classifying the plasticity and behavior of soil under stress—this device provides consistent, accurate, and repeatable results that are vital for civil engineering and construction projects. AZALAB

Manufactured with robust materials and a precision mechanical counter, this model is designed to withstand heavy laboratory use. It features a brass cup suspended by an adjustable bracket and a hard rubber base plate where the grooving tool is used. As the crank is rotated, the cup drops repeatedly from a set height, and the integrated mechanical counter keeps track of the number of blows. This functionality enhances user accuracy and consistency when determining the number of drops needed for the soil sample to close a standard groove, typically at 25 blows for clayey soils.

Casagrande method in mechanical form is known as liquid limit method and has been in use for soil mechanics for a number of decades. The liquid limit data of soils is useful to correlate mechanical properties of soil, such as compressibility and lower shear strength. Liquid limit is the water content at which soil passes from zero strength to an infinite strength, hence the true value of liquid limit cannot be determined.
For determination purpose liquid limit is that water content at which a part of soil, cut by a groove of standard dimensions, will flow together for a distance of 1.25cm under an impact of 25 blows in a standard liquid limit apparatus. The soil at the water content has some strength which is about 0.17N/cm. sq. (17gms/sq.cm.) . At this water content soil just passes from liquid state to plastic state. It consists on a brass cup held on an adjustable bracket.
The cup can be adjusted for a fall of 1 cm and can be raised an dropped on a rubber base of standard hardness by cam action. Complete with one Casagrande grooving tool, one ASTM grooving tool and a height gauge block. A counter to register the number of blows.

Key Features:

  • Mechanical Counter: A built-in counter that provides precise tracking of the number of drops. It ensures compliance with ASTM D4318 and IS:2720 Part V standards.

  • Manual Operation: The crank-operated mechanism allows for smooth and easy operation, requiring no external power.

  • Durability: High-quality brass cup and rugged base construction ensure long service life even with repeated use.

  • Accurate Results: Designed to minimize user error and improve repeatability across tests.

The Liquid Limit Test is crucial for understanding the water content at which soil changes from a plastic to a liquid state. This data informs civil engineers about the workability, compaction characteristics, and shear strength of soils—key factors in the design of foundations, embankments, roads, and other structures. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Q1: What is the purpose of the Liquid Limit Device with Counter?
A: It determines the moisture content at which soil transitions from a plastic to a liquid state, a key classification criterion in geotechnical engineering.

Q2: Does this device comply with ASTM standards?
A: Yes, it complies with ASTM D4318 and IS:2720 Part 5 standards for soil consistency testing.

Q3: What is the function of the counter?
A: The built-in mechanical counter records the number of drops (blows) to reach soil groove closure, typically 25, ensuring accuracy.

Q4: Is it suitable for clay and silt soils?
A: Yes, it is ideal for cohesive soils like clays and silts to assess plasticity and classify them accurately.

Q5: Can this be used in educational labs?
A: Absolutely, it’s perfect for both academic training and professional geotechnical investigations.
