SAND POURING CYLINDER AZA0880
The AZA0880 BS Standard Sand Pouring Cylinder from Azalab is a professional-grade field testing apparatus designed for accurate determination of in-situ soil density using the Sand Replacement Method, in full accordance with BS 1377-9. It is especially suited for coarse-grained and granular soils where alternative methods such as the core cutter test are not applicable or reliable.
This apparatus is widely used in roadworks, embankments, pavement layers, foundation backfills, and general earthwork compaction control, providing dependable field results for quality assurance and compliance verification.
Description
Purpose & Principle
The AZA0880 determines the volume of an excavated test pit by filling it with dry, standardized sand of known density. By correlating the mass of sand used with its calibrated density, the pit volume is calculated. Combined with the mass and moisture content of the excavated soil, the in-situ bulk and dry density of the soil are accurately determined.
This method is particularly effective for coarse soils with large particles, uneven gradation, or gravel content.
Available Cylinder Sizes
| Diameter | Typical Application |
|---|---|
| 100 mm | Standard small pit field testing |
| 150 mm | Medium-volume compaction and QA/QC tests |
| 200 mm | Large pits, deeper layers, heavy compaction works |
All sizes are manufactured to BS precision tolerances, ensuring consistent and repeatable results.

SEMI AUTOMATIC CONE PENETROMETER AZA0852
Principle of Operation
A soil paste prepared at known moisture content is placed in the sample cup. The standardized cone, attached to a calibrated weight, is released using the semi-automatic clutch mechanism, allowing free fall penetration into the soil. After the specified time (typically 5 seconds), the penetration depth is measured using a high-precision dial gauge. The moisture content corresponding to a penetration of 20 mm is considered the liquid limit of the soil, as defined in IS and BS standards.SOIL CONE PENETROMETER AZA0851
Principle of Operation
A soil paste prepared at a known moisture content is placed in the sample cup. The stainless steel cone, of specified mass and angle, is allowed to penetrate the soil freely for 5 seconds. The depth of penetration (up to 20 mm) is measured using a precision depth gauge. The moisture content corresponding to 20 mm penetration is defined as the liquid limit of the soil.Standards Compliance
