Description

Standard Compaction Test – BS 1377, 1924

The Precision Standard Compaction Test Apparatus from azalab is specifically designed to meet the requirements of BS 1377-4 and BS 1924-2, enabling accurate determination of the maximum dry density and optimum moisture content (OMC) for soil used in construction, roadwork, and geotechnical applications.aza

Used in Proctor-type tests, this apparatus simulates light compactive effort to ensure field compaction levels meet engineering specifications. It is a key quality control tool in any soil testing laboratory or on-site investigation.

What’s Included

  • Steel Compaction Mould
    – 105 mm internal diameter × 115.5 mm height
    – Volume: 1000 cc
  • Extension Collar – Secure fit to increase soil input height
  • Detachable Base Plate – Ensures soil ejection and easy cleaning
  • Rammer
    – Weight: 2.5 kg
    – Drop Height: 300 mm
    – Face Diameter: 50 mm
    – Controlled fall for consistent compactive energy

Applications

  • Standard Proctor Compaction Test (BS method)
  • Moisture-density relationship for subgrade soils
  • Soil stabilization and treatment testing
  • Foundation and pavement preparation
  • Geotechnical research and academic use

Specifications

Component Specification
Standards BS 1377-4, BS 1924-2
Mould Size 105 mm I.D. × 115.5 mm height
Volume 1000 cc
Rammer Weight 2.5 kg
Drop Height 300 mm
Rammer Face Diameter 50 mm
Construction Material Powder-coated mild steel / Optional gunmetal
Use Manual operation in lab or field
Optional Add-ons Carrying case, digital blow counter

How It Works

  1. Fill the mould with soil in 3 layers, each compacted with 27 blows from the 2.5 kg rammer
  2. Remove excess soil and weigh compacted sample
  3. Oven-dry the sample to calculate dry density
  4. Plot moisture vs. density to determine OMC

This standard compaction test ensures soil suitability for structural use.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

Q1: Is this apparatus equivalent to the ASTM D698 version?
It is similar but slightly different. BS standards use a 2.5 kg rammer and 105 mm mould, while ASTM uses 2.6 kg and 100 mm.

Q2: Is it suitable for all soil types?
Best for fine-grained and medium plasticity soils. Coarse or gravelly soils require a heavy compaction test.

Q3: Can I request a gunmetal mould instead of steel?
Yes. Gunmetal moulds are available upon request for better corrosion resistance.

Q4: How accurate is this method?
Extremely accurate for field representation when procedures are followed per BS 1377/1924.

Q5: Is the equipment portable?
Yes, especially with an optional carrying case, ideal for both lab and field use.
