Automatic Four Ball Wear Tester AZA1331

The AZA1331 Automatic Four Ball Wear Tester from AZA LAB is an advanced and fully automated instrument designed to evaluate the Wear Preventive (WP) and Extreme Pressure (EP) characteristics of lubricating oils and greases under steel-on-steel sliding conditions.

Conforming to ASTM D2783, ASTM D2266, and ASTM D4172, this tester determines key tribological parameters such as maximum non-seizure load (PB), welding (sintering) load (PD), and composite wear value (ZMZ). It also measures the friction coefficient and performs long-duration wear resistance tests, providing comprehensive data on lubricant performance under controlled pressure, speed, and temperature conditions.

The AZA1331 features a servo-controlled hydraulic load system, computerized control and data acquisition, and real-time test monitoring, making it ideal for research, quality control, and industrial lubricant evaluation.

Description

Description

Principle of Operation

The instrument operates on the four-ball method, where three stationary steel balls are clamped together and immersed in the test lubricant, while a fourth rotating ball is pressed against them under a precisely controlled load.

As the upper ball rotates, friction and wear occur at the point of contact, and parameters such as friction torque, wear scar diameter, and test temperature are recorded.
The data is analyzed to determine:

  • PB (Maximum No-Seizure Load) – The highest load at which the lubricant prevents seizure.
  • PD (Welding or Sintering Load) – The load at which the balls weld together.
  • ZMZ (Wear Value) – A composite measure of wear resistance.
